In Pathfinder RPG (PFRPG or PF1e) there are standard arrays for character creation, specifically for the creation of NPCs. This provides an effective buffet of character ability stats for the GM to choose from to build up any NPC. When I started digging into Fantasy AGE (FAGE), I realized that nothing like this exists. It appeared that the expectation was that the GM would create every NPC from scratch. In the PFRPG campaign I’m converting, there are over three dozen different NPCs that I would have to convert that the PCs interact with on a regular basis, not to mention the adversarial NPCs that they would encounter as well. This seemed like it would be a daunting task to do it all from scratch, so why not take the concept from PFRPG and do something similar for FAGE.
The arrays for PFRPG are as follows:
Basic PFRPG Array: 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, and 8.
Heroic PFRPG Array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8.
Obviously these arrays can’t be used as is. PFRPG has six abilities, where FAGE has nine. So, the simplest way to change this is to expand the arrays.
Expanded arrays:
Expanded Basic Array: 13, 12, 12, 11, 10, 10, 9, 9, 8.
Expanded Heroic Array: 15, 14, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8.
A conversion of these arrays to FAGE ability scores results in the following:
Basic Array: 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 0.
Heroic Array: 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 0.
Now, with two sets of ability score arrays, the next step is to arrange them into useful tables for different types of character builds.
| Ability | Warrior Basic | Warrior Heroic | Rogue Basic | Rogue Heroic | Mage Basic | Mage Heroic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 2 |
| Communication | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 |
| Constitution | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Dexterity | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| Fighting | 2 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| Intelligence | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| Perception | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 2 |
| Strength | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Willpower | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 2 |
These scores provide a starting point for creating an NPC, of course they can be rearranged as necessary to customize for any particular NPC. The ability scores could be rolled up for each NPC, but this table simplifies one step for the GM (me) in the process of bringing the NPCs into the game.
